To those familiar with Lamborghini, the Gallardo is by no means a new concept. In 1995, the original design was called the Cala. At the time, Lamborghini would have come to complete bankruptcy had it not been for the acquisition made by Audi. In an attempt to return the company to its solevent state, all planned production had to be discarded so as to direct resources towards financial necessities. Once the company, under the control of Audi, had regained its ability to stand on its own two feet, production efforts were directed towards the release of the Murcielago (original concept known as the Canto). And now, new for 2004, its younger sibling, the Gallardo.
Because of Lamborghini's new found affiliation with Audi, many of the components found in the Gallardo and Murcielago share traits with Audi's Quattro system. However, by no means does that mean that any aspect of the Gallardo lacks the true characteristics of a Lamborghini. Rest assured that just as in the past, this Lamborghini is in every way a worthy contender to the its rival Ferrari (Modena). And while modestly priced, by no means a toned down Murcielago. But rather, a car unique in its own class.
